As things in the world get shakier, we need to be set apart from the world. For this is not our home; we are in the world but not "of" it.
Jesus said that we are "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world". (Matt 5:13 sermon on mount)
Being salt and light is not optional. Jesus did not say "you can be.." or "you have the potential to be..."
He said you ARE. Everyone who has trusted Christ for salvation and is born again is the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Salt
The value of salt, especially in the ancient world can not be under-estimated.
-Roman soldiers received wages in salt.
-The Greeks considered salt divine.
-The Mosaic Law required that all offerings presented by the Israelites contain salt. (Lev. 2:13) fascinating!! (Side note: did you know that BBQ is God's favorite smell? Think about it, every time an animal is sacrificed and burned, the smell is a very pleasing aroma and just about tickles God's nostrils. Of course you have to add salt, too...)
When Jesus told his disciples that they were "the salt of the earth", as recorded in Matthew 5:13, they understood the metaphor.
While the universal importance of salt is not as readily apparent in our modern world, the mandate that Jesus gave to his first disciples is still relevant and applicable to His followers today.
Salt is a preservative.
Without refrigeration, the fish that the disciples caught would quickly spoil and rot unless they were packed in salt. Once salted, the fish could be safely stored and then used when needed. The spiritual strength of the Christian is to counteract the corruption in the world. Christians, as salt, are to inhibit sin's power to destroy lives. This in turn creates opportunity for the gospel to be proclaimed and received.
We have been given a wonderful privilege to be the salt of the earth, but Jesus gave us a warning. The second half of Matthew 5:13 states: "But if salt loses its taste, how would its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men". Jesus said we can lose our saltiness. When salt is contaminated it becomes corrosive and poisonous. If we have allowed disobedience, carelessness and indifference to rule our lives, we have become contaminated salt and have lost our saltiness. We need to confess our sin and let the Lord restore us to the purpose for which we were called.
In speaking to the Church in Laodecea (Rev 3:14) Jesus says He would rather spit the lukewarm out of his mouth! He would prefer you to be either hot or cold but NOT lukewarm. Be either saltwater or freshwater; the two cannot mix and retain their properties.
Love people but don't dilute the truth of Jesus.
In Colossians 4:6 we read, "let your speech always be filled with grace seasoned with salt so you will know how to answer everyone."

Light
In Matthew 5:14, Jesus tells His disciples, "You are the light of the world". As "salt", the Christian is to counteract the power of sin. As "light" we are to illuminate or make visible.
In the Bible, light is a spiritual metaphor for truth and God’s unchanging nature (James 1:17).
It is repeatedly used in the Bible to help us understand that God is wholly good and truthful (1 John 1:5).
When we are “in the light,” we are with Him (1 Peter 2:9).
He exhorts us to join Him in the light
(1 John 1:7),
for giving us light was His purpose (John 12:46).
Light is the place where love dwells and is comfortable (1 John 2:9-10).
God has created light (Genesis 1:3), God dwells in the light (1 Timothy 6:16) and God puts the light in human hearts so that we can see and know Him and understand truth (2 Corinthians 4:6).
Our lives are to be an ongoing witness to the reality of Christ's presence in our lives. When we worship God with pure hearts, when we love others as ourselves, and when we do good without growing weary, we are as lights shining. It is important, however to know that it is not our light, but the reflection of the Light of the world, Jesus Christ Himself, that people will see in us.
In Philippians 2:15, the apostle Paul says, "Believers, you are to shine as light in the world". (Or as stars in the universe, other translations say) The Greek word used here is very similar to the word for the beacon that a lighthouse emits. That beacon is bright, unmistakable in its purpose. It warns of danger. It directs to safe harbor. It provides hope for those who have lost hope.
Everyday we are surrounded by people groping around in the darkness, separated from the God who loves them. God uses His children, like beacons from a lighthouse, to show the way to Him.
-------
So, when 2 Corinthians 11:14 tells us that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light,” it means that Satan capitalizes on our love of the light in order to deceive. He wants us to think that he is good, truthful, loving, and powerful – all the things that God is. Most people are not drawn to darkness, but to light. Therefore, Satan appears as a creature of light to draw us to himself and his lies. How can we discern, therefore, which light is of God and which light is of Satan? Our minds and hearts are easily confused by conflicting messages. How can we make sure we are on the right path? Psalm 119 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (verse 105) and “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (verse 130).

The words of God have power. Just as God’s voice spoke physical light into existence, it can speak spiritual light into our hearts. Exposure to His voice – in His Word – will help us recognize the difference between the good light of God and that which is counterfeit.
Isaiah 8:20-22 paints a poignant image of the darkness that results from ignoring the Word of God. Darkness is a result of attempting to find truth without the Word of God. Sadly, as Isaiah says, when people do not have the “Light of dawn,” they wander in darkness and often become angry at God, refusing to come to Him for help. Then, in their distress, they focus their hatred towards the only One who can save them.
Do you need to realign your life and become seasoned again with salt and light from God? Have you become diluted or lost your focus?
God can help! Call on Him to help you get back on track.
"Father, I need Your true light that brings healing and freedom. I ask You now to awaken my purpose in You and activate the salt and the light that only You can give. Make me set apart and holy to shine forth your love and be a beacon for the lost to usher them into Your kingdom. In Jesus' name, Amen."
